Dentists understand that many patients have a fear or phobia of dentistry treatments, needles, and the sounds dental devices make. Sedation dentistry is a technique used to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental appointments. Thought patients are conscious for the entire duration of the appointment, able to answer questions and respond to their dentist, sedation dentistry allows them to remain in a state of relaxation, allowing for a more positive overall dental experience.
When a patient elects to have sedation dentistry, they have the option of taking a pill orally, or having their dentist administer nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose. The patient is then asked to take several deep breaths to inhale the nitrous oxide. The effects of the nitrous oxide are immediate and quickly help the patient relax.

Other patients only need sedation dentistry during longer dental appointments or treatments. Nitrous oxide is an ideal choice for both short and long appointments.
The amount of nitrous oxide your dentist administers can be easily controlled depending on your needs. Some patients experience a small amount of anxiety during their dental appointments and thus only require a small amount of nitrous oxide, while others who experience a great amount of anxiety will require a larger amount of nitrous oxide to help them relax. Your dentist can adjust the amount of nitrous oxide you receive to meet your needs.

Fighting Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

The best way to combat dental anxiety and phobia is still sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry allows patients to relax through the use of sedatives and tranquilizers. Although many people suffering from dental phobia and anxiety still refuse treatment, sedation dentistry has opened a new set of doors for them.
Sedation dentistry is performed for various treatments, from oral prophylaxis to root canal, in equally varying intensities or degrees. And these, in turn, are achieved through various methods.
Anxiolysis, or light sedation refers to the least intense form of sedation. Here the patient is very relaxed, but still very lucid and responsive to stimuli. This degree is often achieved through inhalation methods, with the use of nitrous oxide or laughing gas.
Moderate or conscious sedation causes a patient to be more relaxed and less responsive to stimuli while still being awake and lucid. Most sedation dentists use the oral method, making patients take sedative pills like Valium or Ativan.
When in deep sedation a patient may shuttle in and out of consciousness. The patient will no longer have the ability to respond to almost all stimuli. Chicago sedation dentistry and sedation dentistry in most states reserve this intensity for severely phobic or anxious patients or for surgical procedures. This is done through the intravenous or the IV method, and the effects are instantaneous.
Sedation dentistry in some states, like Chicago sedation dentistry do not practice deep sedation unless extremely necessary, as most anxious and phobic patients are more comfortable when they still have a small degree of control. And in some cases, deep sedation only reinforces a patient’s fears. Sedation dentists have to carefully watch out for this to avoid making things worse.
While sedation dentistry has nothing but good intentions in mind, it may not be good for you if your fear or phobia concerns the dentist as a person and not the dental procedures, if you have intense fear of being harmed, or if you have major trust and control issues. Dental institutions like Chicago sedation dentistry can recommend other sources of professional help to allow you to settle your fears and issues first before you can push forward with sedation dentistry.

Going to the dentist can be a highly traumatic experience for many people, and sedation dentistry (or relaxation dentistry) has been of enormous value to many who face anxieties over dental procedures. Fear of the dentist or of dentistry is a huge inhibiting factor in many people’s dental health programme, and can lead to serious gum and tooth disease through not being able to make and keep regular check up appointments.
What is involved in Sedation Dentistry?
Dentists who offer sedation dentistry in their practices use two one or both of common types of sedation – oral conscious sedation and inhalation sedation.
Oral Conscious Sedation
The process which involves the taking of oral sedatives before a dental procedure is called Oral Conscious Sedation. The patient will adopt a feeling of well-being and become relaxed after ingesting the sedatives. Stress and worry over treatments will be dissipated, and the dentist will be able to perform any procedures necessary. The patient will still be conscious and able to comprehend and respond to any instructions given by the dentist, hence the name oral conscious sedation.
With the oral conscious sedation method, the patient will be instructed to take a prescribed sedative the night prior to the procedure before going to bed, and a further sedative in the morning on waking up. This means that the patient must be driven to and from the procedure. Many patients are quoted as saying that using this sedation method, they did not remember much about the dental examination or procedure once it was over.
Inhalation Sedation
The inhalation of Oxygen and Nitrous Oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is called Inhalation Sedation This method of sedation is often favoured by dentists who perform sedation dentistry because of the rapid effect it has on the patient and the subsequent recovery speed after the procedure. The patient will sometimes fall asleep after the sedation has been administered and will often remember little or nothing of the procedures involved. Inhalation sedation has been widely used by dentists for many years.
Why Have Sedation Dentistry
Other than the patient anxiety factor mentioned earlier, sedation dentistry can be helpful to the dentists too, for example where there may be a difficult part of a procedure in an inaccessible part of the mouth, where the dentist may need to be necessarily a little more ‘rugged’.
For patients the benefits can be huge; particularly when there is a large amount of oral work to be done, using sedation this can often be performed in one sitting rather than over several appointments, thus avoiding repeating and increasing the patient’s anxiety.
Which is the Best Type of Sedation
While the choice of sedation is pretty much up to the individual, your dentist may advise on one method as a better option given your dental history and the procedure to be undertaken. Both types have their advantages, but the effects of inhalation sedation are shorter lasting and less prohibitive on the patient’s ability to resume normal day-to-day activities quickly.
Other Forms of Sedation Dentistry
There are two other methods of sedation dentistry – intravenous conscious sedation where sedatives are given intravenously, and general anaesthesia, which is normally only undertaken in dental hospitals, and is either inhaled or intravenous, or both.

What You Need to Know about Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry, also referred to as sleep dentistry, is the practice of administering some form of sedation to a patient before completing a dental treatment. The level of sedation can be moderated to fit the needs of the patient. This type of dentistry works well for a lot of people who are apprehensive about getting dental treatments or who have special needs. However, before you elect to use sedation at your next dental appointment, it is important that you understand the pros and cons of this medical technique.
Pros of Using Sedation Dentistry
For many people, sedation is a necessary component of dental treatments. This need can derive from an intense fear of dentists or dental treatments, or it can derive from special medical conditions. Fortunately, sleep dentistry is fairly safe and very effective at keeping patients unaware of the discomfort and pain that is associated with some dental treatments.
There are three main pros of using sedation dentistry. First of all, it helps to alleviate the anxiety that many people have about visiting their dentist. Secondly, it makes dental treatments possible for people that have medical conditions that involve erratic or uncontrollable body movements such as Parkinson’s disease. Finally, it allows dentists to work on the teeth of kids and people with special needs who either can’t sit still for long periods of time or who would otherwise be combative in the dental chair.
Cons of Using Sedation Dentistry
While there are many pros of using sedation dentistry, there are also a few cons. The first con is that it is a lot more expensive than regular dental treatments. This is because it usually has to be done in a hospital setting and involves special medical professionals. Next, it has added health risks, especially when you have to use a general anesthetic and are put under for your treatments. Finally, sedation dentistry can be extremely risky for people who smoke or patients with certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, breathing problems and obesity.
Is Sedation Dentistry for You?
For many people sedation dentistry is a safe option. However, it doesn’t come without some risks. Before you decide to use sedation for your next dental treatment, talk to your dentist and to your general doctor about your risks and your options. If your risks outweigh the benefits, don’t use sedation dentistry. If the benefits of getting the dental treatment outweigh the risks that you face, sedation dentistry can be a great option for you.

Do You Have A Dental Phobia? Sedation Dentistry May Be For You

Many people have a dental phobia. They simply have an irrational fear of the dentist. However, for some it is not a simple phobia, it could have stemmed from an early childhood experience or a complex procedure many years ago or a bad experience with a procedure that went wrong when not asleep or under any form of anaesthetic, may have triggered this fear. However, now sedation dentistry has come to a head there is no need to have a fear of the dentist and be worried that you are going to feel large amounts of pain.
Sedation dentistry is where the dentist will give you a local anaesthetic and put you to sleep so as to prevent you from feeling little if any pain at all, you will have no worries about the dentist performing a complex procedure on your teeth or in your mouth, you will be able to sit in the chair comfortably fast asleep not knowing what is happening and therefore removing the fear. With this in mind there is no real reason as to why you cannot take a trip to the dentist and have whatever work you need doing on your teeth and mouth area.
There are a number of procedures that can be performed while you are sedated, these include:
• General Dentistry: For example root canal treatment
• Implant Dentistry: Replacing missing teeth with a fixed implant into the root of the missing tooth
• Porcelain Dentistry: Placement of porcelain crowns and veneers
• TMJ Dentistry: A painful condition that stems from the jaw joints
Depending on how the individual reacts to the procedure and anaesthetic, it could take between 2-6 hours for the procedure to finish, and to correct. The benefit of sedation dentistry is that you will wake up from the procedure feeling refreshed and confident. Now knowing that you felt little to no pain at all while you were sedated, you will have also had the procedure done that you may have been putting off for years due to your fear of the dentist.
It is common for dentist to use sedation dentistry these days, and no matter what your fear is, if your dentist feels that you could benefit from sedation dentistry you could be the ideal candidate for such a procedure.
The most common fears of visiting the dentist are embarrassment of your mouth, fear of painful needles, a high gag reflex, fear of choking and previously bad experiences.
Now that you know that sedation dentistry causes little to no pain, and that you do not have to worry about being awake during the procedure what are you waiting for? Regain that perfect smile and mouth that you have been putting off for years due to your fear.
